Ends up Keno just didn't have the numbers

ROCHESTER - Keno, that fickle game of chance and numbers, lost its bid to be wagered on in Rochester by the slightest of margins after a recount on Wednesday revealed a tie.

The ballots from the vote earlier this month that give Keno a single-vote victory were recounted by hand at Rochester City Hall with the referendum question failing to get a majority vote.

City Clerk Kelly Walters proclaimed the results.

The call for a recount resonated just days after the Nov. 7 election, with state Rep. Matthew Scruton leading the charge and paying the $25 recount fee.

The original vote had given Keno the nod by a single ballot, 1,036-1,035, but after two "yes" votes were changed to "no's" and one "no" vote was changed to "yes," - both due to ballot marking issues - it became apparent the Keno recount ended in a dead heat, making Keno a dead issue, at least for now.
