A little warm-up would melt some snow and bring some sap.

ROCHESTER - New Hampshire Maple Weekend will go on as scheduled but whether there’s anything sugarin’ down is no guarantee.

Colder than normal temperatures mean that if the mercury doesn’t rise well into the 40s and 50s today and the rest of  the week, there might not be any sap running, said Christine Meader of Meader’s Maple Sugar House in Rochester.

“We need it to be well above freezing the better part of the day for the sap to have time to run,” Meader said on Tuesday.

She said about 70 taps had been put in sugar maples on the farm, but nothing much was flowing yet.

Meader said the taps are put in regardless of the temperatures, but then it’s just a waiting game, waiting for mild days and cool night that promote the sap’s flowing.

She said last year was a good year for maple syrup harvesting, but this season will likely be a short one. As soon as the trees green up the season is over.

New Hampshire’s Maple Weekend begins Saturday and the Meader’s Maple Sugar House will be open from 8-4.

If the rest of the week just warms up a bit, wouldn’t that be sweet.
