It's racy, it's raucous, it's ribald, it's uproarious.
It's Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" at the Rochester Opera House, and you've got till Nov. 1 to see this tart little gem of a musical production that will have you laughing in your chair for two hours straight.
The plot revolves around the American grandson of the infamous scientist, who struggles to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believed.
But when he gets to Transylvania he gets caught up in the same frenzy to create life, but Igor - his hunch-backed assistant, picks the wrong brain, "Abby Normal," which leads to madness, mayhem and tons of fun.
Make no mistake about it, however. This show is not for the kiddies or anyone who doesn't like a good belly laugh.
The cast, led by Kevin Mahaney as young Frederick Frankenstein, is as solid as an oak tree, with supporting actors Sarah Barry as Inga, Zeke Solis as the zany hunch-backed Igor and Sam David Cohen as the monster, who puts on a show-stopping performance during "Putting on the Ritz."
With smart direction by Jenry Towle and brilliant choreography by Brad Reinking, this show is fast-paced, fluid and just downright fun.
And we can't overlook the brilliant set designs and special effects such as the wall projections by Broadway Media.
Put that together with a musical that has strong voices across the board and solid acting by the entire cast and you have a couple of hours of sheer enjoyment that you'll smile about long after the last curtain falls.
The 1974 Mel Brooks production was nominated for two Oscars and reviewers called it nothing less than "comedic genius."
That same genius is on stage through Nov. 1 at the Rochester Opera House.
Give yourself a Halloween treat that won't put on some pounds. Go see "Young Frankenstein."
