Acton fire chief hurt fighting blaze that leveled home

ACTON, Maine - The Acton Fire Chief was transported to Southern Maine Medical Center for smoke inhalation as multiple towns responded to a blaze that destroyed an unoccupied home on the Hopper Road.

The two-alarm fire was called in around 6:45 a.m. on Friday, and had smoke pouring from the structure when crews first arrived.

Due to heavy smoke and flame, firefighters evacuated a nearby residence.

Hopper Road was blocked for about five hours while fire and rescue crews worked the scene.

The home was destroyed.

Acton Fire Chief Peter Smith, 46, suffered smoke inhalation, was treated and later released from the hospital.

Fire units from Acton, Shapleigh, Newfield, Alfred, Lebanon, Sanford, and Milton, as well as deputies from the York County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. 

The name of the owners and whether or not the home had insurance were not immediately verified.

The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
