ROCHESTER - The coveted Red Hayes Award was given to Rochester Patrol Officer Jason Harris earlier this week.
Also known as the Rochester Patrol Officer Community Service Award, it is given to an officer for his or her service in promoting and improving a positive community relationship.
According to a Rochester Police post, "Officer Harris is a great example for and a great representative for this agency."
The Rochester Police Department began seeking nominations in June.
The award is named in honor of Willis "Red" Hayes, a beloved Rochester police officer who served from the 1940s to the 1970s. Known for his buoyant spirit and exceptional communication skills, Red Hayes was a familiar and friendly presence in Rochester. His ability to connect with individuals, even in challenging situations, earned him the respect and admiration of the community. Hayes was known for his compassionate and supportive nature, and his approach to law enforcement emphasized guidance and positive interaction over hostility.
This award is incorporated into the Police Department Policy Standard 26.1.2 Commendations and Awards.
Officer Harris accepted the recognition and plaque earlier this week during a Police Commissioners meeting.
It was presented to him by the Rochester Thank a Cop committee.
Congratulations Officer Harris!
