CANDIA - An Auburn man is dead following a crash with a dump truck in Candia.
The crash occurred Wednesday around 6 a.m. on Route 101 eastbound near mile marker 67.2 in Candia.
Calls into police alerted officers that an SUV and a dump truck were involved and that the SUV was on fire and its driver was entrapped.
When troopers arrived on scene they found that several Good Samaritans had removed the severely injured driver from the burning SUV. Troopers quickly determined that the driver had been the lone occupant of the SUV and that the dump truck had been parked on the shoulder of the highway due to a mechanical problem and was unoccupied at the time of the crash, according to a Dept. of Safety press release on Wednesday. Troopers along with Good Samaritans rendered aid to the injured driver until emergency medical services arrived.
The preliminary investigation determined that an unoccupied 2001 Mack dump truck was disabled and parked on the paved right shoulder of the highway when a 2019 Nissan Rogue operated by Alexander C. Smith, 25, of Auburn, crashed into the rear of the dump truck, leading to the SUV catching fire.Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Due to the severity of the crash, members of the New Hampshire State Police (NHSP) Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Unit and the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
While Troopers investigated the scene and emergency personnel worked to remove the involved vehicles, along with an extensive cleanup of debris, all lanes of Route 101 East were closed, and traffic was diverted off Exit 3 for approximately three and a half hours. The scene was ultimately cleared, and all lanes of travel were reopened at 9:33 a.m.
All aspects of this crash remain under investigation. Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Kevin LeDoux at Kevin.P.LeDoux@dos.nh.gov.
