SANFORD, Maine - Police on Wednesday said the body found in the Mousam River on Friday is that of a Springvale man who died from accidental drowning.

The investigation into the death of William J. Fawcett showed no foul play, police said, and the state Medical Examiner’s Office autopsy confirmed that fact.

Fawcett’s body was found floating in the Mousam River on the eastern bank near the Mill Street dam around 6 p.m. on Friday.

During the police investigation, officials theorized the body could have floated downstream over the dam and didn’t know when or where Fawcett may have died.

The cause and manner of Fawcett’s drowning was not given and may not be known.

No age was released, but earlier estimates placed him in his 40s or 50s.
