City library's teen summer reading program hailed a success

ROCHESTER - Rochester Public Library officials are hailing the success of their Teen Room's 2023 Summer Reading program, which aimed to foster reading and community among teens aged 12 to 18.

Participants collectively logged 80,000 minutes of reading. In addition, the program offered fifteen different activities, including art sessions, bead animal crafting, origami workshops, and tie-dye sessions.

"We have a growing group of kids ages 12-18 attending book groups, activities, and teen advisory meetings," said Amy Lemelin, Teen Room Librarian. "They appreciate being rewarded for reading and having a space in the library to call their own."

Teens reading 120 minutes per week received a $5 gift card from Jetpack Comics or a free ice cream from Golicks. Weekly drawings offered a chance to win a $15 gift card to Barnz's. The program concluded with a raffle, where readers and program attendees had chances to win from a pool of 8 prizes, including Fisher Cats tickets, an autographed Red Sox photo, and a coveted Yeti water bottle.

"I enjoyed seeing so many kids using the Teen Room's resources this summer," Lemelin added. The success of this year's Summer Reading program highlights youth engagement and the Library's commitment to nurturing growth, exploration, and a sense of community.
