Detours for Soap Box Derby, Garrison School Color Run announced

DOVER - Both the New Hampshire Soap Box Derby and the Garrison School Color Run will take place in Dover on Sunday, and police have released the listed the following street closures and detours.

Soap Box Derby, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Broadway will be closed to all traffic between Oak Street and Hill Street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will be detoured via neighborhood streets, including Park and Hill streets. Oak Street will remain open.

Parking will be prohibited on Broadway starting at 6 a.m. in posted areas between Oak and Hill Streets. Residents and business owners with driveways on this section of Broadway, or on Rose Street, will not be able to access their driveways by car during this time and must plan to park on nearby side streets or in the business parking lot at 121 Broadway.

The New Hampshire Soap Box Derby is an annual event for boys and girls ages seven to 20 involving gravity-powered cars racing in side-by-side competition. Dover is the site of the 81st annual New Hampshire local championship; top-seeded racers in each region are eligible to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. Garrison School Color Run, 9-10 a.m.

The Garrison Elementary School's annual "Color Run" event will be held Sunday, June 8, at 9 a.m.. The event starts and finishes at the Garrison Elementary School, 150 Garrison Road.

Between 9 and 10 a.m., there will be brief closures of Garrison Road and Shaws Lane to accommodate the event. On-street parking will be restricted where posted along Shaws Lane and Garrison Road on Sunday morning until after the event concludes.

Motorists and residents should expect brief delays on neighborhood streets, including Birch Drive, Linda Avenue, Riverdale Avenue, Arbor Drive, Hemlock Circle, Morningside Drive and Meridian Drive. Dover police and event volunteers will be on hand to help manage the traffic flow.

All roads will reopen to traffic by 10 a.m. Parking for the event is available in the Shaws Lane ballfields parking areas.

The Color Run is a two-mile run/walk course through the surrounding neighborhood streets promoting wellness, community and school spirit. Participants are encouraged to wear white or light colored shirts, and will be doused with "color" at certain points along the course.
