Drinking and driving, fireworks top safety concerns

Two of the most dangerous hazards of local 4^th of July celebrations, fireworks and impaired driving, can be averted by using a little common sense, area safety officials say.

Regarding fireworks, neither Lebanon nor Milton have a local fireworks ordinance, so displays are legal, but Lebanon Fire Chief Skip Wood urges residents use extreme caution when setting them off.

First, he urges residents use a flat surface in an open space for ignition to avoid catching woods on fire. Also, make sure you have a water source available if any grass or shrubbery does catch fire.

Also, avoid using fireworks that don’t have warning labels and cautions explaining correct usage, as these are probably illegal fireworks.

Safety officials urge consumers to follow warning labels on alcohol as well, and if they do intend to imbibe at a holiday barbecue at a friend’s house, make sure they have a designated driver to get them home.

Lt. Louis Nyitray, commander of Troop A Barracks in Alfred, which covers Lebanon, said State Police would have their normal complement of troopers in Lebanon, but may also have special OUI and Seat Belt patrols as well.

 Milton Police Chief Richard Krauss said his officers will be out in force as well to make sure everyone has a safe Independence Day.
