ROCHESTER - City Councilors took time out during their regular meeting on Tuesday to honor former city mayor Harvey Bernier for his service to the city in the 1990s.

Bernier became mayor in 1995 and served a single two-year term, changing the face of Rochester "for the better," said City Councilor and Deputy Mayor David Walker, who served on the council when Bernier was in office.

Walker said Bernier's drive and determination also helped spearhead the restoration of the Rochester Opera House, which is now a thriving performance arts venue and city jewel.

"Your two years as mayor were amazing," Walker added.

Bernier, who now lives in Mexico, said he was very appreciative of the honor and the public service that the current board and mayor now perform as the city moves forward.

"The job you folks do is so important," Bernier said as he received a plaque with an inscription and gavel.

Smiling, he quipped, "Half the people love you and half the people hate you, and it's not always the same half."

Walker said the City Council got the idea to honor former mayors a couple of years ago, but then COVID hit and put the plan on hold until now.
