DOVER - The Dover Skate Park's grand opening ceremony and inaugural skate competition has been postponed to Sunday due to the forecast of rain on Saturday.
The grand opening ceremony will occur at noon on Sunday and will be attended by Mayor Robert Carrier, Recreation Director Gary Bannon, members of the Dover Skatepark Design Committee and Recreation Advisory Committee.
The ceremony will take place during the Ryder Street Co Skate Jam, which runs from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the new park. The beginner's session starts at 11 a.m., followed by the main event, which includes the Best Ollie, Rail Jam and Game of Skate competitions. There will also be food trucks and music at the event. All proceeds will benefit the Dover Children's Home. Click here to register, which is free.
Construction on the skatepark began in June, which followed work preparing the site for construction last year. In 2021, the City Council awarded the bid to construct the skatepark to Artisan Skateparks of Kitty Hawk, N.C., at a cost not to exceed $500,000. There are a few remaining items to be completed at the site, such as landscaping, drainage system work and the installation of picnic shelter.
The skatepark is located at Guppey Park, 148 Portland Ave.
