ROCHESTER - James B. Valyo, 78, died on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born on November 16, 1946, in Long Island, NY, Jim was the beloved son of the late Michael Valyo and Alice (Allen) Dolecki. He was raised in Norwood, NY, where he established enduring friendships, a life full of energy, service, and devotion to family.Jim proudly served in the United States Coast Guard from 1965 to 1969 as a Chief Petty Officer and telephone technician aboard the Icebreakers Chase and Westwind. His service took him to Cuba and Greenland, and he was honorably discharged in Newburyport, MA, where he began raising his family.
Following his military service, Jim built a successful 30-year career in telecommunications, retiring as a Construction Foreman and Cable Splicer with Verizon.
Jim was known for his larger-than-life personality and his ability to light up any room. He had a passion for the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. A talented bowler, he once held the title of New York State Champion. He also loved golf--especially tournaments with the best food--and spent many weekends treasure hunting at yard sales. A master gardener, dedicated youth basketball and baseball coach for over a decade, and a longtime umpire, Jim gave generously of his time and spirit. He even played Santa for friends and family, spreading joy wherever he went. Above all, Jim cherished his family and the time he spent with them.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda (Cross) Valyo of Rochester; his children, John Valyo of Dover, NH; Kristen Tsakiris and her husband William of South Berwick, ME; and Marc Valyo and his wife Elizabeth of Cary, NC. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Taylor, Luke, Faith, Noah, Blake, and Zach. He also leaves behind his siblings, Michael and Jeff Valyo, and Alice Vandermeer, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
