LEBANON - Rene Doiron said his first year of operating a golf course has been a learning experience, but he’s pleased with the progress the links are showing.

Doiron, who you’ll see out working on his Lebanon Pines Golf Course on Center Road from dawn to dusk, said the biggest problem this summer was the brown patch, a disease that especially affects the greens.

He said the disease had the greatest negative impact on the eighth-hole green, which was one of the weaker greens to begin with. He said after several cycles of treating, aerating and top dressing, it came back well, though.

Doiron said other major achievements this year include burying irrigation ditches and putting in valve boxes.

Doiron said he averages about 45 golfers on his course a week, despite no advertising except in The Lebanon Voice and on two signs out on Route 202.

Meanwhile, he’s had several local businesses buy advertising on various tees.

Lebanon Pines Golf Course will be open through Oct. 25, the day before hunting season starts.

Doiron said hunters often encroach near the course and it wouldn’t be safe to stay open.
