ROCHESTER - Former Bruins defenseman Frank Simonetti said he can't wait to lace up the skates again to play in Saturday's charity hockey game to benefit Rochester's Share Fund.
Simonetti, who played for the Bruins from 1984-1988, and is president of the Bruins Alumni Association, spoke with The Rochester Voice on Thursday adding anytime they get to play a charity hockey game it's for a worthy cause, but just as important, it's a chance for camaraderie with teammates as - just for a couple of hours - they get to rekindle the feeling of glory and purpose they enjoyed while playing in the National Hockey League.
"When you play in the NHL, you play until they say you can't," he said. "It's sad to lose that connection, it's devastating. This gives us a connection back to when we had that brotherhood and at the same time give back to causes that help people who are doing good things in their community."
Simonetti will be playing alongside other former Bruins including Ken Hodge Jr. the son of former Bruins great Ken Hodge; Bob Sweeney, a centerman; and goalie Reggie Lemelin, who helped take the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Final in 1988, but more importantly helped end the longtime losing streak to the Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs.
"Reggie helped break that curse after many years of frustration," Simonetti said.
The Share Fund Marvels, the home team playing against the Bruins alum, comprises mostly players from the local men's hockey league and Rochester Youth Hockey.
One of the Marvels, Logan Hatch, who graduated from Spaulding High School in 2012 and helped take the Red Raiders to the playoffs all four years, said he's excited about playing against Bruins alums.
"I'm looking forward to it, it's a great opportunity," said Hatch, who plays defense.
Proceeds of the game will benefit the Share Fund, which operates out of the James Foley Memorial Community Center, supporting Greater Rochester area needy with food, clothing, financial support, and diaper bank.
The game will be played at the Rochester Ice Arena located at 63 Lowell St. beginning at 2 p.m. with doors opening at 1:15.

Meanwhile, Simonetti, who just got back to Massachusetts from Florida where he played golf with former Bruins greats defenseman Brad Park and goalie Gerry Cheevers, said he's looking forward to it, too.
"We always like to get out on the ice and have a good time and play the game we love," he said.
