PORTSMOUTH - A Maine teenager spotted speeding 125 mph on Interstate 95 led police on a chase that ended shortly after he crashed into multiple signs at the Portsmouth Traffic Circle.

The incident began around 1:38 a.m. on Tuesday when a trooper was patrolling Interstate 95 in Greenland when he observed a 2017 Subaru Legacy traveling northbound at 125 mph in a posted 65 mph zone.

While trying to catch up to the Subaru, another trooper was notified that the speeding car was heading his way. When the three vehicles converged the driver of the Subaru exited the interstate at Exit 5 North and crashed into several signs at the Portsmouth traffic circle. The driver then attempted to continue for a short distance before stopping on the Route 1 Bypass North, where troopers and Portsmouth Police took the driver and other passengers into custody.

Troopers identified the driver as Michael A. Wozny, 18, of Westbrook, Maine.

Multiple passengers were identified as juveniles.

During the investigation, Troopers developed probable cause that Wozny was impaired. He also initially provided a false identity to troopers. Once positively identified, it was determined that Wozny did not hold a valid driver's license.

He was evaluated at a local area hospital and determined to have suffered no injuries. Two of the juvenile passengers were transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. All juvenile passengers were ultimately released to parents or guardians.

Wozny was charged with three felony counts of reckless conduct, two misdemeanor counts of disobeying an officer, three misdemeanor counts of aggravated driving under the influence of drugs or liquor, three misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanor operating without a valid license, misdemeanor criminal mischief, a transportation of alcohol by a minor violation, and a violation of reckless operation. Wozny declined bail and was held at the Rockingham County Department of Corrections pending an appearance in Portsmouth District Court.

All aspects of the incident remain under investigation by Trooper Patrick Vetter. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Trooper Vetter at Patrick.R.Vetter@DOS.NH.GOV.
