One-day heat wave will be a doozy

A late summer blast of heat that will include real-feel temps above 100 degrees will envelope the area today.

The National Weather Service in Gray issued a bulletin a little before 9 a.m. this morning saying that temperatures will peak in the mid-90s.

A heat advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. this afternoon with a heat index of up to 104 degrees expected.

“The humidity will make it difficult for the body to cool itself,” the bulletin says. “Those planning outdoor activities should bring extra water and be alert for signs of heat exhaustion.”

Dewpoints around 70 will exacerbate the situation.

People who have to work outdoors are urged to reschedule strenuous activities until late evening. If they can’t they are advised to drink plenty of fluids and take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning.

Residents are also urged to check on elderly relatives and neighbors. 

Anyone affected by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded place or an air-conditioned room.

A low of 67 is expected tonight, with temperatures cooler tomorrow with a high of 82.
