CONCORD - Pam Smart, the infamous Winnacunnet High School media technician who in 1990 orchestrated the murder of her husband at the hands of her then-lover, a student of hers, has been denied another chance at parole.
New Hampshire Gov. Kelly Ayotte has rejected Smart's recent request for a sentence commutation hearing before the state's Executive Council and the governor..
Smart, 57, is presently serving a life sentence.
"People who commit violent crimes must be held accountable to the law," Ayotte said in a Thursday statement. "I take very seriously the action of granting a pardon hearing and believe this process should only be used in exceptional circumstances. Having reviewed this case, I have decided it is not deserving of a hearing before the Executive Council."
Smart, a high school media director, allegedly plotted and orchestrated the murder of her husband, Gregory Smart, with the help of a 15-year-old student, Billy Flynn, and his friends. Patrick "Pete" Randall, Vance "J.R." Lattime, Jr., and Raymond Fowler.
Smart's trial was one of the first in the United States to allow television cameras in the courtroom. WMUR broadcast the trial gavel to gavel keeping Granite Staters glued to their television sets on a daily basis.
All of Smart's accomplices in the murder, including trigger man Flynn are out on parole.
