SANFORD - A Sanford man is being held without bail after he was charged on Monday with assaulting his infant twins, one of whom sustained what police are describing as critical injuries.

Anthony Carpinelli, 21, of 25-C Bates Street, was charged with aggravated assault, a Class B felony.

An investigation into the alleged assault began on Friday, when detectives from the Sanford Police Department learned that the twins had been taken to Southern Maine Health Care Emergency Department with serious injuries due to head trauma.

The infants were transported to Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, one with serious injuries, the other with critical injuries.

Police say Carpinelli, the biological father of the twins, was the caretaker of the infants when their injuries were sustained and that they were inflicted intentionally.

Carpinelli is being held at the York County Jail.
