Porcupine, obviously lacking street smarts, causes two-car wreck on Washington St.

ROCHESTER - A porcupine wandering on Washington Street and unwilling to budge from his spot on the roadway caused a two-car crash near the intersection of Estes Road late Wednesday night.

The incident unfolded a little after 10 p.m. as a motorist fearing it could knock a motorcyclist off their bike stopped to try to reposition the porcupine off the roadway, but the recalcitrant rodent would have no part of it.

Moments after another caller reported seeing the porcupine in the road, a collision occurred involving two cars.

Rochester Police Capt. Todd Pinkham said today that while the Good Samaritan stopped their vehicle to assist the porcupine off the roadway and prevent any cars from hitting it, a Jeep Patriot slowed and moved toward the center line to avoid the stopped car and porcupine, and was rear-ended by a Ford Taurus.

William Sylvia, 56, of Gonic, was driving the 2017 Ford Taurus, and the 2014 Jeep Patriot was operated by Felicia Honaker, 34, of Rochester.

No one was injured, however both vehicles sustained damage as a result of the accident, Pinkham added.

A portion of Washington Street was closed temporarily while both vehicles was towed and fluid spills were cleaned up.

But there is a happy ending, sort of.

Police dispatch narratives indicate that the porcupine was uninjured and "was safely moved along."
