Godspell at the Rochester Opera House will have you spellbound.

This young group of singers, dancers, comics and saviors have the collective swag to pull off a thoroughly entertaining production of the 1970s classic musical that played on Broadway, off Broadway and with touring companies across the country.

Directed by Sharon Arsenault, the version blends high-energy song and dance, adlib slapstick and contemporary humor to teach the parables of the Gospel of Matthew and Luke in a delightfully sweet and innocent motif.

All of your favorite tunes like "Day by Day", "Turn Back O Man" and "Beautiful City" are sung beautifully with a standout performance by Jeremy Asher as Jesus leading the way with both vocals and timing.

Even a balky head mic early in the first act failed to faze Asher, who danced off stage, grabbed a replacement and never missed saving a soul.

Sarah Asher, Jeremy's brother, contributes another strong vocal performance, including a sizzling, sexy "Turn Back O Man" as she saunters down the theater aisle to start Act 2.

"She's usually very shy," smiled director Arsenault, her mom.

In the play's first act there's enough gags and giggles to make even a heretic laugh as the cast weaves its way through some favorite parables, while the second act features a Passion scene that will make even the toughest Christian tear up.

Through it all these 11 young accomplished cast members create a seamless experience that will surprise and delight.

And when you leave, you'll leave loving Godspell, either for the first time, or yet again.
