Primo Cubano will be at the Rochester Opera House on Saturday night

ROCHESTER - Primo Cubano, a band that plays Cuban-style Son, Salsa, and Cha Cha, will herald in the upcoming Cinco de Mayo holiday Saturday at the Rochester Opera House with their own special blend of Latin music that makes people want to get up and dance.

Primo Cubano features strong rhythmic beats and Spanish harmonies that will make eventgoers want to cut a rug, so the Opera House floor will be flat with chairs removed for a massive wooden dance floor.

Skilled Latin dancers are expected to come from Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to strut their stuff, and during the band's break there will be dance performances by two professional dance companies.

Primo Cubano plays traditional Cuban dance music called "SON" dating back to the turn of the 20th century. Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa. It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience.
Primo Cubano consists of Paul D'Alessio on tres Cubano and vocals, Marc Chillemi on trumpet, percussion and vocals, Lenny Hatch on congas, bongo and bell, Duane Edwards on upright bass, and Eric Winter on timbales, percussion and vocals.
For those who would like to learn there will be an introductory salsa dance lesson from 7:30-8 p.m. After the band there will be more dancing until midnight with recorded music. Tickets are $16 including the ticking fee.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a cash bar.
