ROCHESTER - Robert K. Johnson, 87, passed peacefully at his home in Rochester, N.H., on Saturday, August 30, 2014, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 13th, 1927 in Portland, Maine. Robert was a longtime resident of Gloucester, Mass.

He was married for 67 years and was with his wife for 70. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Besides his family, his work was his life. His first job as a teenager, he worked for Cape Ann Ice and Oil, driving the delivery truck.

He then joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Oregon City for two years during WWII. After his honorable discharge he began working for himself as a carpenter. He worked for over 50 years as the Johnson Company, building many homes and doing work for residents of Gloucester. He built one of the classrooms in Saint Ann's Church and was a devoted Catholic.

He was still working at 80 years of age, hand-nailing the roof on his home in Rockport, Mass., so his wife would have a good roof that would last her.

Gloucester was his home and the place he loved the most. He enjoyed going to Destino's for lunch with his wife. He loved walking on the cut and seeing the boats in the harbor.

In March of this year he moved to Rochester, N.H. with his wife, to be with his granddaughter Carina and her family as his health declined. He loved children and was happy to be surrounded by so many of them at the end of his life. He was the greatest thing that ever came down the pike and will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

He was visited by many close friends in the past few weeks and appreciated his longtime friendships with The Kennedys, Harold Ercolani, Wendy Worrell and her sons, Trey and Bevan, Barbara and Brownie, Dr. Pearce, Dr. Arsenian, Dr. Gross and the staff at Destino's.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette M. Johnson of Rochester, N.H., son, Benjamin Johnson and his wife, Heather, of Rockport, Mass., brother, Martin Hanrahan and his wife, Carol Lee, of Gloucester, MA, granddaughter, Carina Johnson, her boyfriend, Douglas Dunham, of Rochester, NH and his great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Dunham, Abbigayle Dunham and Madison Dunham of Rochester, N.H.; his sisters-in-law, Constance Duniven, of Washington state and Miriam Hammel, of N.J.; his niece, Patti L. Dolby Mcallister, of N.J.; her sons Paul, Jake, Danny and their children. Along with many other nieces, nephews and other family.

He was predeceased by his mother, Stella Hanrahan, her husband Martin Hanrahan, father Walter Johnson; brother Donald (Jake) Johnson; infant sister, Marian; grand-daughter, Sandy Lou Johnson; son, Robert K. Johnson Jr.; grandparents and many uncles, nieces and cousins from Maine and Massachusetts.
