ROCHESTER - The Rochester Fire Department will partner with United Diagnostic Services to provide early detection health screenings for all sworn fire department members. This initiative underscores the department's continued commitment to firefighter health, according to a statement from the city released today that noted firefighters are more likely to develop certain cancers at a higher rate than the general population.

The screenings will take place from June 16-18 at Central Fire Station, 37 Wakefield St. Through this agreement, firefighters will have access to non-invasive, ultrasound-based diagnostic testing aimed at identifying early signs of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Blood and urine testing will also be included to provide comprehensive insights into participants' health.

Firefighters face significantly higher risks of developing certain types of cancer compared to the general population. According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), cancer is the leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty deaths. This proactive health screening program is an important step in protecting those who protect our community.

Key Features of the Screening:

  • Non-invasive, ultrasound-based diagnostics

  • Comprehensive testing in under 30 minutes

  • Additional blood and urine testing targeting cancer markers

  • Includes tests not typically offered by local primary care providers

  • Conducted on-site at Central Station

Early detection plays a vital role in improving outcomes and saving lives. Data from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network shows that firefighters are up to 14% more likely to die from cancer than the general public. By hosting this wellness event, the Rochester Fire Department aims to reverse that trend through early intervention.
