SPRINGVALE, Maine - Roland Varney "Sonny", 89, of Springvale, formerly of Rochester, N.H., died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness.

Roland was born Oct. 18, 1933, in Rochester, the son of Lloyd and Laura Varney Sr, and is a graduate of Farmington High School, class of 1951.

At the outbreak of the Korean War, Roland enlisted in the Navy, proudly serving 4 years before his discharge.

Returning to the area, he began a long and rewarding career with Eastern Air Devices of Dover, N.H., building airplane engines for over 40 years, retiring as Production Control Manager.

He was a member of the Sanford American Legion, enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and traveling.

He is predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Laura Varney Sr, brother Lloyd Varney Jr, and a sister Betty Radcliffe.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Gloria (Griffin) Varney of Springvale, two daughters Karen Comfort and her husband Paul Sr of Ft. Edward, N.Y., and Linda Terry and her husband Tom of Barrington, N.H., Grandchildren include Paul II, Danielle and Tiffani Comfort, Mychala and Brianna Demeritt, and great grandchildren Camden and Riley Comfort.
