SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - The death of a woman in a fatal South Berwick shooting that occurred on Saturday was the result of a domestic dispute, State Police reported on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Sherri Sweet, 37, was shot in the head during a struggle over a gun with her boyfriend, Jeremiah Godrey, 43, at their 48 Brattle St. residence around 8:40 p.m., drawing police who received a 911 call concerning a domestic dispute.
Godfrey, 43, who made the call, reported that he had an argument with his girlfriend and described a struggle over the gun, during which Sweet sustained a gunshot wound.
First responders arrived on the scene, rendered aid transported Sweet to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital where she died on Monday.
After an autopsy and investigation by state and local police, it was determined that Sweet's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was homicide, meaning she had been killed by another.
Godfrey was arrested on a murder warrant around noon on Wednesday in South Berwick and transported to the York County Jail.
His initial arraignment may happen as soon as today.
