SOMERSWORTH - The Somersworth man killed on Friday when he and his dog were struck by a vehicle on Old Rochester Road have been identified.
The pedestrian, Steven Forrest, and his dog, Randall, died on scene despite lifesaving efforts that were performed on both. The man's name was not released, but he has been identified as an adult male.
The accident occurred around 4:40 p.m. near the intersection of Old Rochester Road and Hickory Lane in Somersworth.
The unidentified driver involved in the crash and his vehicle, a 2017 Volkswagen Gulf, were found a short distance from the accident site.
The driver was cooperative with officers and did not appear impaired, police say.
Somersworth Police Chief John Sundersand said an investigation into the crash is open and ongoing.
"Events like this must be investigated properly and that takes time," he said. "Over the course of this investigation, we will be able to determine if there was fault, and if there was, who is responsible, or if there was no fault, and this was a tragic accident."
He also urged pedestrians to wear light or reflective clothing especially when walking at night or during inclement weather, and that those walking with pets, to place some type of reflective gear on them as well.
Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact Somersworth Police at 603.692.3131, or anyone can leave an anonymous tip at 603.692.9111.
