SUV engulfed in flames atop Pisqataqua Bridge shuts down I-95 for an hour and half

PORTSMOUTH - A vehicle that experienced a massive malfunction and broke into flames atop the Interstate 95 bridge that connects New Hampshire and Maine shut down the all four lanes of traffic for an hour and a half Tuesday morning.

Around 8 a.m., the New Hampshire State Police were notified of a motor vehicle incident along I-95 North in Portsmouth where State Police Troopers found a disabled vehicle in the middle of the roadway on the Piscataqua Bridge fully engulfed in flames.

The vehicle, a 2007 GMC Acadia, suffered a catastrophic failure, stopped moving and quickly became engulfed in flames.

Four motorists inside the vehicle were able to get our unhurt, according to a Dept. of Safety press release sent out Tuesday afternoon.

All four lanes of the Interstate were closed for around an hour and a half while emergency personnel worked the scene.

The New Hampshire State Police were assisted by the Kittery, Maine, Police Department, Kittery, Maine Fire Department, Portsmouth Police Department, Portsmouth Fire Department and Dana's Towing.
