NEW YORK - The teenager accused of attacking a rookie cop and two other officers with a machete in New York on New Year's Eve has been identified as a Wells, Maine, man.
The New York Post and Fox News both reported today that Trevor Bickford, 19, was the man taken into custody after the unprovoked attack near Times Square a little before 11 p.m.
Police are looking into whether it was a terrorist attack, Fox New reported.
The rookie cop working his first shift reportedly suffered a skull fracture, but is expected to be OK, New York Mayor Eric Adams said earlier today.
The officers were part of a detail protecting Times Square during New Year's Eve celebrations, and were located at West 52nd St and 8th Avenue at the time of the attack.
One of the officers under attack shot Bickford in the shoulder, according to safety officials.
The attack took place just outside the security area where most of the festivities were taking place.
Bickford was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Several of Bickford's family members recently became aware of his extreme Islamist ideologies and told police, sources told ABC News.
