I was blssed to have a wonderful mother.

She’d be 93 if she were alive today.

I hope she’s wasn’t listening just then. If you said “she” in front of her, you’d hear whatfor, I’ll tell ya.

“Who’s she?” she’d demand.

So … Mom would be 92 if she were alive today.

Mom had the energy of three moms, even in her 70s.

Mom would clean the house, cook dinner and sit on that stool by the sink and watch us three kids eat one of her delicious meals. And trade those contrarian barbs with Dad as he sipped on his beer in his special chair at the kitchen table.

Later in life when I’d regale her with funny tales of my newspaper career, we’d hoot and holler and she’d say, “Harrison, you should have your own newspaper.”

Or, “Harrison, you’ve got to write a book.”

But who has time for such things when you’re working 50 hours a week just trying to put food on the table, raising your own kids and bringing them up right. And a printing press costs about a zillion bucks anyways.

So I never wrote that book while Mom was alive, nor did I start my own newspaper.

But I did write a book that was published in 2010, Freak the News, almost exactly 10 years after she died. And two years later I started my own online newspaper.

I know she loved my book. And I know she loves my newspaper. That’s a nice feeling.

Thanks, Mom. Happy Mother’s Day.

And Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there in Milton, in Lebanon, and everywhere else.
