Town will replace destroyed memorial tree

LEBANON - A monument and special tree planted behind the Old Town Hall in the memory of the Southern Maine Garden Club’s first president was evidently destroyed during last year’s renovation work.

Lebanon Historical Society President Nancy Wyman, who is also a past president of SMGC and its current treasurer, brought it to the attention of selectmen this week after someone notified her it was missing.

The maple tree and monument were dedicated to the memory of Ruth Fusillo, SMGC’s first president who died several years ago.

“A lot of people are very sad about this,” said Donna Claveau, an SMGC official.

Selectmen Chair Karen Gerrish said the board was very sorry to hear that the tree and monument had been inadvertently destroyed and that a new maple tree would be planted in Fusillo’s memory at the Town Offices on Upper Guinea Road. She said a ceremony to rededicate the tree is tentatively planned for next month on a Saturday so garden club members can attend.
