ROCHESTER - A Rochester teenager was arrested for DWI and leaving the scene of an accident on Thursday after police say he tried to pass another car on Eastern Avenue, lost control and flipped over.

Stephen Mercier, 19, of 67A Winter Street, was charged with driving while intoxicated, conduct after an accident, possession of alcohol, operating without a valid license, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Police got the call a little after 6 p.m. for a two-car collision on Eastern Avenue and found that a black 2005 Ford Mustang was traveling east and being operated by Justin Beckey, 21, of Rochester, with a silver 2011 Dodge Charger driven by Mercier traveling behind.

Police say Mercier attempted to pass Beckey's vehicle on the right side and that Mercier's vehicle struck Beckey's vehicle from behind, causing Mercier's vehicle to lose control and flip.

Rochester Police Sgt. Michael Brinkman said today that speed on the part of Mercier's vehicle was likely a factor in the crash and that several mailboxes were taken out as he attempted to pass the car in front.

Mercier suffered a minor hand injury while Beckey was not injured. The Dodge Charger was towed from the scene.

Police say Mercier left the accident scene, but was located a short time later and arrested. He was bailed on $5,000 personal recognizance and will be arraigned in March in Rochester District Court.

Police were not immediately available for further details on the accident.
