WESTMORELAND - State Police are investigating the drowning of a man whose body was found in the Connecticut River.
First responders were dispatched to Ferry Road in Westmoreland around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.
Upon arrival they found the body of a deceased male in the river near a capsized canoe.
The deceased male has been identified as Cory Walker, 41, of Westminster Station, Vt. Information gathered with assistance from the Vermont State Police indicates that Walker frequently camped near or on the Connecticut River and occasionally slept overnight in his canoe, according to a State Police press release sent out on Monday. The canoe was found capsized and anchored to the riverbed a short distance from shore.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be an accidental drowning. At this time, the death is not believed to be suspicious, though the circumstances leading to the canoe's capsizing remain under investigation.
Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Marine Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Haroutunian at (603) 227-2112 or Nicholas.M.Haroutunian@dos.nh.gov.
