A couple of spectacular burgers waiting to be devoured (Rochester Voice photo)

ROCHESTER - I was talking to a business acquaintance from Boston yesterday and during our conversation I mentioned I was taking my son Spencer out to lunch at one of his favorite restaurants, Wild Willy's Burgers at 724 Columbus Avenue.
He said he'd heard about Wild Willy's and would be stopping in for a burger the next time he was up in the Rochester area.
That's the lore and allure that surrounds this burger lover's paradise that has been around for some 20 years.
Hamburger buns are OK, especially if they're toasted and buttered, but it's what's inside the bun that counts, and the quality of the beef, the freshness, is beyond compare. It's all certified angus beef, Pineland Farms natural beef or USDA Prime Beef, the top grade.
And you can dress up your burger any way you like, from your typical tomato, lettuce and pickles, to more exotic options like sauted onions, mushrooms, bacon, jalapeno, guacamole, grilled red and green peppers and onions.
Or try one of their specialty burgers, like the General Burnsides, which comes with blue cheese crumbles, bacon, jalapeno, onion and BBQ sauce; or the Smoke House, with Montreal seasoning, smoked cheddar, bacon, sauted onions and mushrooms, hickory mayo, an A-1 sauce.
And when it comes to cheese they aim to please. There's American, swiss, smoked cheddar, Cabot sharp cheddar, Cabot pepperjack and blue.
Of course any burger joint has fries and Wild Willy's is no different, but these fries come from potatoes grown just up the road at Green Thumb Farms in Fryeburg, Maine. That makes a big taste difference.
Another treat you don't want to forget is their delicious (stick a fork in it, it won't move) frappes.
Spencer got the Willy Burger and I got an Angus beef burger with sauted onions and mushrooms with blue cheese.
We shared a large side of sweet potato french fries.
Wild Willy's opens at 11 a.m. daily.
