MILTON - Nute High School students from Mrs. Johnson’s advisory spent one morning last week polishing their leadership skills with the third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students at Milton Elementary School. It was a hands-on team effort to provide a variety of field day activities for the younger students at the grade school.

“This gives the high school students an excellent leadership opportunity while providing a memorable day of physical activity and healthy competitive activities for the younger students,” said adviser and Physical Education teacher Karen Johnson. “My advisory students were excited to give back to an event that they enjoyed as elementary students.”

The advisory students supervised more than a dozen competitive activities, such as jump rope, hoola hoop, water balloon toss, egg walk, sack race, scrabble relay, parachute race, caterpillar walk, balancing activities, and more.

MES Physical Education teacher Kirk Sharrow annually organizes the event.

The Nute girls’ varsity basketball team also volunteered to assist.

Fifth-grader Haley Holmes said, “The best part of the day was that the activities were timed and recorded. Knowing what time to beat caused us to work harder as a team to reach our goals.”

According to sophomore Bailey Beaulieu, who ran the scrabble relay, “It was a great day full of fun and games for the schoolchildren.  I’m glad the rain held off. The students had a blast competing with their schoolmates.”

The Nute High School advisory program provides students the opportunity to develop key life skills and habits of learning in support of academic achievement, personal growth, and interpersonal skills.
